Income Tax Preparer (VITA)

The individual tax preparer works closely with Community Action staff to prepare customers state and federal tax returns. Volunteers will work to ensure that customers are qualifying for important tax credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Preparers serve as a trusted (and no-cost) resource, ensuring customers file correctly.
Supervisor: Financial Services Coordinator & Tax Site Manager
Tasks and Responsibilities:
Prepare state and federal tax returns using tax software TaxSlayer;
Direct customers to appropriate on-site financial services;
Work cooperatively with staff and other volunteers to provide high-quality service to customers;
Maintain strict confidentiality, providing as much privacy as logistically possible;
Qualifications & Skills Needed:
Desire to learn how to complete IRS and MN Revenue taxes;
Excellent English communication skills both verbal and written;
Ability to analyze applications and paperwork;
Ability to discuss customer’s tax and financial situation with empathy and respect;
Computer proficiency and customer service skills;
Experience working in a diverse ethnic and socio-economic environment;
High school diploma/GED and age 18+ required. Able to pass background check;
Ability to speak, read, and interpret Somali, Hmong, Spanish, Karen or other language (optional);

Must successfully complete the following:
Attend an informational orientation, early December 2018 (date to be determined);
Attend IRS tax training (December 2018 or January 2019);
Successfully complete (open book) basic IRS certification test;
Volunteers are required to assist 4+ hours for at least 6 clinics during the tax season.
Tax season is February 2 nd thru April 13 th, 2019
Choose timeframe (can do a half shift) and which location(s) best fits your schedule:
Mondays, 1pm-9pm at 450 N Syndicate St, St Paul;
Saturdays, 8am-4pm on Feb. 2 nd, Feb 9 th, March 23 rd or April 6 th at 450 N Syndicate St, St Paul; or,
Thursdays, 8am-2pm at 2150 Radio Drive, Woodbury.
Schedule will be determined with supervisor, some flexibility may be available. Total of at least 24 hours volunteering during the tax season.
Advance Registration for College Students (internship is available)
Yes, you can reserve this as a volunteer/intern position by registering in advance. Example: be accepted for spring term by registering during fall term and meeting with us before you depart for winter break.
