Million Bulb Walk

Purpose: Million Bulb Walk volunteers assist with our Special Events staff by making sure guests have purchased tickets, had their tickets scanned, checking hand stamps, providing crowd control at the return tram stop and general customer service.

Essential Duties:

  • Arrive on time with professional demeanor and appearance, dressed appropriately for the weather
  • Maintain regular contact with event staff members to whom assigned
  • Work with Special Event staff to answer guest questions
  • Remind guests to purchase tickets and have tickets ready for scanning
  • Check guests for hand stamps for event entrance
  • Remind guests to remain at tram pick up location at the end of the walking route

Reports to: Special Event Staff

Time Commitment/Shift: 3:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. (6 Hours)

Qualifications:

For this position, the candidate must:

  • Be strongly committed to providing volunteer hours
  • Be comfortable working alone for brief or long periods of time
  • Be polite and courteous
  • Be comfortable speaking to large and small crowds

Equipment Used/Provided: Messenger bag with flashlight, safety light and reflective safety vest

SPECIAL AMMENITIES: Water, Dinner Provided (Sandwich or wrap, plus chips)

Physical and Environmental Conditions:

  • Auditory: Must be able to understand instructions delivered in normal conversation to self or with an interpreter/chaperone/guardian/parent
  • Visual: Must be able to read fine print on regular ticket paper and watch their assigned area for guest movement, especially near the tram stop
  • Environmental: This is an outdoor opportunity that experiences frequent exposure to the dark, as well as cold and mild inclement weather such as a light rain.
  • Physical: This is an outdoor opportunity that requires frequent standing, walking, and short periods of sitting.

Description

We have opportunities for those who enjoy working out of doors, for those who enjoy working with children, and for those who enjoy administrative work air-conditioned comfort as well.

The Norfolk Botanical Garden is 155 acres of the most beautiful landscapes in Hampton Roads, Virginia, and our volunteers help maintain all of it. Our educational programs for children and adults are extrememly active. We have daily summer camps for children ages 5-10 from June to end of August, and daytime, evening, and weekend programs for adults and families. Master Gardeners explain the wonders of the Garden through our docent program. Garden Teacher Assitants assist our young campers with crafts, games, and learning experiences. And there are people working behind the scenes in administration making sure everything runs smoothly. Volunteers help with all of it!
