STAIR, a nonprofit children’s literacy program, is seeking tutors to work with 2nd grade students at Dillard University and Robert Moton Charter School on Monday and Wednesday afterschool during the 2019-2020 school year. A list of prospective tutors will be maintained through the summer of 2019. Prospective tutors will be contacted in July-August to provide the fall 2019 tutor training schedule. All tutors are required to attend one of our free 2 hour training sessions, and clear a background check (free to the tutor, and are performed to ensure the safety of our students).

Each year STAIR recruits and trains hundreds of volunteers to work one-on- one with public school lower elementary school students to improve their reading and language skills as well as their self-esteem. These students are particularly in danger of academic failure and need extra help to succeed. The program works in partnership with schools to supplement the classroom work. Collaboration with parents, teachers, and principals allows STAIR to target the students who can most benefit from the services STAIR offers. The program has served over 6,000 young students from greater New Orleans public schools since it began in 1985.

The STAIR program provides each child with professionally designed curriculum materials, school supplies, teaching aids, healthy snacks, and trained site managers to supervise and lend qualified help at each site. STAIR depends on support from the community to provide this service at no cost to the students.

About STAIR - Start the Adventure in Reading

Location:

1545 State St., New Orleans, LA 70118, US

Mission Statement

-- To increase the reading level of "skill deficient" students who participate in the program -- To increase each participant's sense of self-worth and esteem by providing a program which expands each student's knowledge of self and the greater world of reading -- To provide a caring environment which will promote a greater and more meaningful dialogue among multi-ethnic volunteers, students, teachers and parents

Description

STAIR is a reading tutoring program for at-risk public school second graders reading below grade level who are referred to us by their teachers. STAIR volunteers, after going through an initial training class, tutor the students -- one tutor for each student -- once a week, either after school or on Saturday morning.

Second grade is a critical stage in reading development. If a student is not reading by the end of first grade, then intervention at the second grade level is crucial.
