The Interpreter Program Assistant works with the Training and Interpretation Services Coordinator to recruit, interview, and onboard new on-call interpreters. The volunteer in this role may also process and schedule incoming interpretation requests and fill assignments by carefully matching the skills and availability of interpreters for several languages. This volunteer may also work with staff to handle requests for interpretation services and train staff on how to book interpreters.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist the Training and Interpretation Services Coordinator with interpretation services for common refugee languages including Arabic, Burmese, Dari/Farsi, French, Kinyarwanda, Rohingya, Spanish, Swahili, Somali, and Tigrinya
- Schedule and conduct Language Proficiency Interviews (LPI) with new on-call interpreter applicants and the corresponding Case Manager
- Recruit interpreters from the community by attending multicultural events and contacting ethnic-based community associations
- Schedule the 2 volunteer sessions for new on-call interpreters and report the results of the evaluations to the Training and Interpretation Services Coordinator
- Schedule and possibly perform orientations for new on-call interpreters
- Prepare new hire employment paperwork and assist new hires with completion as needed
- Files on-call interpreter time logs, time sheets, and 90 day evaluation forms
- Schedules 90 day evaluations with the appropriate staff person using the "Evaluation Form for Interpreters" and returns the document to the Training and Interpretation Services Coordinator
- Update and maintain the Interpreter Terminology Database
Qualifications
- Volunteers with some Human Resources knowledge preferred
- Previous experience interpreting or working with interpreters is helpful
- Excellent written and oral communications skills
- Previous experience in a multicultural environment and sensitivity to cultural considerations
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and competing job priorities on tight deadlines
- Proficiency in Microsoft computer programs (i.e. Word & Excel) and Google documents
- Data-entry experience
- Ability to work under deadline pressure
- Able to quickly adapt and implement changes in processes and procedures as needed
- Volunteer training for working with refugees will be provided
Clearances required & training
Volunteer will need a level one Fingerprint Clearance card.
