LVI is seeking individuals to serve as Literacy Specialists in its VOCAL - Volunteer Outreach for Community Action in Literacy - AmeriCorps program. As Literacy Specialists, VOCAL members provide educational and economic opportunities to low literate adults in community and faith-based agencies throughout the metropolitan area. Within the programs, members serve as one-to-one and small group tutors in basic literacy, ESL and/or GED preparation, volunteer tutor recruiters, mentors and job search coaches. Members are also involved with community outreach, program planning, and social and volunteer engagement activities.
Since its founding in 1994, AmeriCorps has been in the vanguard of national and community service, providing much needed knowledge and resources to cities and towns throughout the country. Individuals joining AmeriCorps as a full-time member serve 1,700 hours and make a 12-month commitment to "getting things done for America". In return, members receive a monthly living allowance of $1,166, health insurance, and an education award at the end of service of $6,095.
