As Literacy Specialists, VOCAL Americorps members provide educational and economic opportunities to low literate adults living in the greater Chicago area. Members recruit tutoring volunteers, provide one-on-one or small group instruction on basic literacy skills, ESL, or GED preparation, as well as prepare new adult readers for the workforce. We currently work with sites such as Howard Area Community Center, Instituto del Progreso Latino, Association House, Waukegan Public Library, and Midwest Asian American Center to name just a few of our placement sites.
Since its founding in 1994, Americorps has been the vanguard in national community service, providing much needed knowledge and resources to our cities and towns. Members receive a bi-weekly living allowance as well as over $5,800 in educational funding at the end of their service. We currently have both full time (approx 35 hours per week) and part time (approx 20 hours per week) positions available throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs.
Contact VOCAL Americorps today and become a part of the solution to adult literacy. Americorps members are offered extensive training in education skills and finish their service with new talents, knowledge, and a network of fellow workers as they advance through their careers.
