Hello! We are looking for volunteers to assist with the Monarch Magic Program. During the course of this program, we raise monarch caterpillars for educational purposes at Children's Fairyland. The program includes a 2-hour training session with Jackie Salas, our Landscape Supervisor. If you are interested in learning more or participating, please continue reading.
Lake Merritt has an overwintering and breeding monarch butterfly population. In order to supply an educational program and keep the population healthy we have developed a harvesting and cleaning protocol that we follow in the Monarch Magic program. During this program we collect insect eggs and food and bleach them in specific concentrations to eliminate pathogens.
If you are interested in helping monarch butterflies and can commit to volunteering two hours a week with this program, please email outreach@fairyland.org. Please tell us why you’re interested in the program, and let us know about any gardening or entomological (insect) experience you have.
Thank you!!!!
