Furry Tales helps our younger children through a reading program that brings elementary children, volunteers and dogs into the classroom to work in a small group. The kids will practice their reading by reading aloud to our pups. Our program is all about promoting the joy of reading and building reading skills.

Currently looking for solo volunteers or volunteers with dogs (we call these our dog teams). Volunteer dogs have to go through a short assessment and socialization process to make sure they are a good fit for our elementary programs.

Times, Wednesday mornings, Thursday mornings. Locations at elementary schools throughout Tampa, all morning volunteer slots.

Mission Statement

Empowering Kids - Changing Lives - One Dog at a Time

Description

Our core program is offered at the Dorothy Student Thomas Center, a school for Exceptional Student Education within the Hillsborough County Public School system. This school serves as an alternative for students with extreme emotional and behavior disorders or other disorders that prevent them from attending a main stream public school.

While the focus of our programs is to help at-risk youth, we continue to serve people in need...because once the dogs are trained, they are placed with individuals in the community who have certified needs. These dogs go on to empower others through their service as a therapy or companion dog for those suffering from PTSD or anxieties and children with autism...giving them the chance to regain their independence and resume a more productive life.
