Be a music coach in the Seattle Music Partners Middle School Music Project (MSMP)!
MSMP coaches spend one evening a week assisting students as part of the Middle School Music Project, our evening ensemble program for middle school-aged SMP alumni that meets at the Garfield Community Center. MSMP coaches lead either one-on-one or sectional lessons and provide consistent guidance to students as they practice challenging repertoire and improve technique throughout the school year. MSMP coaches also participate in community building activities with students and fellow volunteers every week. This opportunity is available to college-aged and older volunteers.
Instrumentation:
Instrumentation needs within MSMP are based on student enrollment. Traditionally we have had students who play the following instruments: violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and percussion. If you play an instrument other than the ones listed above and are willing to be flexible, contact us to talk about how you might still be able to help.

Mission Statement
Seattle Music Partners’ after-school program is an innovative combination of weekly music instruction and mentoring for underserved youth. We also provide a unique opportunity for skilled musicians to give back. We believe that music is a powerful tool for inspiring and empowering young people. We also believe that music-learning opportunities should be available to all children on an equitable basis, regardless of economic status, race or the schools they happen to attend. Because music-learning opportunities often are limited or inaccessible, SMP provides a free after-school music program for 4th and 5th grade students who attend low-income schools in the Central District. Our mission is to help underserved students learn to play an instrument and read music.
Description
SMP provides an innovative combination of weekly group music instruction and one-on-one mentoring, working with elementary students who attend low-income schools in Seattle's Central District. We offer individual music lessons and ensemble experience to over 100 students, twice weekly.
At SMP, we pride ourselves in building a program with a keen focus on quality music instruction, youth development and social justice.
Our mission is to help children in low-income schools learn to play instruments and read music. To attain this goal, we recruit, train and support skilled musicians as volunteer music tutors who lead one-on-one music lessons each week, or assist teaching artists in our group lessons. We also provide instruments to participants and transportation where needed.
Our program directly and deliberately serves students who identify as low income. The majority of our students are students of color from a wide variety of racial and ethnic groups. Our students also have a variety of family structures and circumstances, ranging from single parent homes, guardianships, and/or homelessness.
We believe that providing a child with the opportunity to build a foundation of musical skills, coupled with the strength of a mentoring relationship, helps foster confidence and an overall engagement in learning.
We also provide a unique opportunity for skilled musicians to give back and experience tremendous personal growth as volunteers.
