POSITION DESCRIPTION
In Tanzania, Swahili is the language of instruction in primary school and yet, the secondary school curriculum and instruction is English-based. This results in a language barrier that is a significant obstacle to learning for most students. Over 60% of secondary students typically fail the national exams, in large part due to their lack of English language comprehension.
The Dageno Girls Center is accepting applications for a volunteer English Language Teacher (volunteer position) who will oversee the intensive English Foundations Course for incoming Form I students, teach Form I - V English language classes and lead extra-curricular activities throughout the year to help students to improve their English speaking, reading and writing skills. Ideally we are looking for someone with high school ESL teaching experience who can understand the challenges of teaching to an exam driven curriculum whilst at the same developing students' wider skills and understandings. Many students will be learning English as a third language having learned to speak their local language at home and Kiswahili at Primary School. The ESL Teacher will provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth.
