Children's Services has a new volunteer opportunity - the lead volunteer for Afternoon Reading Fun program (description here: https://www.broomfield.org/2611/Story-Times-Ongoing-Programs).

2 Thursdays a month, our ARF dog teams come to the library and kids (K-5th) who struggle to read spend 10 minutes reading to a dog. This is a fantastic program and has helped many a child. However, we need a lead volunteer to run the program.

The Lead does not need a dog, but does need to enjoy dogs. The Lead volunteer needs to be able to talk to families about signing up their kids, help kids enter and exit the room for their turn, monitor the time so no child runs over their allotted 10 minutes in the program and chat with families about the program while their child is in the story room reading to the dog. The Lead volunteer will arrive at 3:45pm to help sign up interested kids and stay until the program is over at 5 p.m.

The Lead needs to:

  • be dependable and be able to commit long term
  • be flexible and adaptable when the program does not go according to plan (e.g. one of the two dog teams does not show up)
  • be organized (the Lead will time the child's time with each dog)
  • be personable (the Lead will talk to the parents and families waiting for the story time about the program, the library, and general conversation)
  • be a strong leader
