Join the Adopt A Stream Foundation on Tuesday, October 17, from 7pm to 9pm as we host the first of a two-part Streamkeeper free training event for anyone who lives, works, or recreates in the Thornton Creek watershed. The event will be at North Seattle College - Room CC1161, located near the headwaters of Thornton Creek’s South Branch. There is free parking for those who attend! Registration is required by calling 425-316- 8592 or emailing ashleya@streamkeeper.org.
The first part of the training includes a great underwater video of salmon spawning and a fast-paced introduction to Five Steps of how to "adopt" a stream:
1. Investigate information about Thornton Creek (historical, physical, biological, chemical, social and political)
2. Find allies interested in protecting and enhancing the creek
3. Establish goals to improve water quality and fish/wildlife habitat
4. Create and action plan designed to meet established goals
5. Become a Streamkeeper and carry out planned actions
The second part will be a Field Training with two date options: Thursday October 19 or Saturday October 21. Everyone who completes both the introductory and field training events will receive a free copy of the Streamkeeper's Field Guide: Watershed Inventory and Stream Monitoring Methods. In addition, those who represent a college, school, or community group will automatically be entered into a raffle to win biological and water quality monitoring equipment to help with their long-term Streamkeeper efforts.
