Come join us as we educate children about healthy eating, food and taste.

What do Volunteers do? Volunteers are an essential component of the work that we do with children, helping out in the classroom but also providing a mentoring role for children. After participating in a hands on training, volunteers are partnered with a Spoons Across America Educator and assist in all aspects of program implementation. We look for an ongoing commitment between volunteers and a particular classroom or school, yet can also accommodate one-time volunteers. Volunteer responsibilities include assisting with program set up, working directly with children, teaching cooking skills, and assisting in the kitchen where appropriate. We are looking for individuals enthusiastic about healthy eating and children’s programming to join us!

When and where are your programs? We teach programs for school children across the NYC boroughs. Programs occur throughout the school year and there are opportunities for an extended commitment as well as one-time opportunities.

Will I be trained? All volunteers receive training at the Spoons Across America offices (630 Ninth Ave @ 44 th St in Manhattan), and are required to attend one of the following training dates:

  • Monday October 2nd: 5:00-6:30
  • Wednesday, October 4th: 12:00-1:30

What programs do you have? We have a number of on-going programs for school age children in New York City. See our website www.spoonsacrossamerica.org for details.

I'm ready to go! How do I sign up? If you are interested in volunteering with Spoons Across America this year. Please contact Ali McDowell, Director of Programs and Partnerships, at ali@spoonsacrossamerica.org. In your email, please indicate the following:

- Training session you will attend: Monday 10/2: 5:00-6:30 or Wednesday 10/4: 12:00-1:30

* Please note: Volunteers must complete a background check prior to the program date

I want to volunteer, but I am not available right now. Will there be other opportunities to get involved? Definitely! If you are unable to volunteer at this point, we will have other opportunities available this winter and spring. If possible, please attend one of the trainings in October. Programs are ongoing and once you are trained you will be able to volunteer. Additional trainings will be held later this year.

I want to volunteer, but I can’t attend the training. Will there be other trainings? Depending upon need and availability, additional trainings may be scheduled this fall. Please contact Ali with your availability.

* Do you work for a business or company that wants to make a volunteer commitment? We can schedule a special training sessions for groups of 10 or more people, onsite or at our offices. Contact Ali for more information.

Mission Statement

Spoons Across America, the recipe for healthier children, is a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to educating children, teachers, and families about the benefits of healthy eating. We work to influence the eating habits of children through hands-on education that celebrates the connection to local farmers and the important tradition of sharing meals around the family table.

Description

At Spoons Across America, we believe the best approach to good nutrition is to encourage children to lift up their spoons, excite all their senses, and taste new healthy foods. Our programs actively engage children to use all of their senses through hands-on experience and direct observation ‒ appearance, texture, scent, and taste. Through our programs, children become independent and inquisitive taste-explorers.

Spoons Across America strives to improve children’s relationship with food and help them understand the long-term benefits of healthy eating. Through our nutrition-based programs, children develop a healthy food curiosity that has a lasting impact throughout their lives.

Spoons Across America’s comprehensive and progressive approach to food and nutrition education in public schools begins in 2nd grade and continues until children graduate from elementary school in 5th grade. Children participating in our programs have educational experiences around food, tasting, nutrition and health that are developmentally appropriate and build upon previous concepts and experiences. All of our programs are hands on and exploratory based, as well as including opportunities for writing and drawing, and contain take home materials for families with recipes, related activities, and opportunities for further discovery.
