Our Nonprofit Mission is very simple:

'Supporting Science through the Arts for Wildlife Conservation and Animal Welfare.'

The Zoological Lighting Institute is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to supporting photobiology researching particular, as this science is under-represented yet crucial for animal welfare, wildlife conservation and community health purposes. ZLI and its offshoot PhotoDiversity Film Festival advances the necessity of cultural, social and economic diversity to enrich the sciences of light and their application in protecting the environment and the life within it.

The Zoological Lighting Institute’s Board of Directors comprises leaders from the nonprofit, creative and scientific sectors dedicated to the organization’s mission. As the preeminent global organization in its field, The Zoological Lighting Institute’s Board strives to be a model of ethical and efficient performance.

Our board members champion the value of diversity for the advancement of of science, and the necessity of science in advancing animal welfare in managed care and wildlife conservation in the field, to the benefit of community health, safety and welfare. In addition to the standard roles and responsibilities of a board member, our board members are active advocates and ambassadors for the organization and are fully engaged in identifying and securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary for The Zoological Lighting Institute to advance its mission.

Industry

The Zoological Lighting Institute connects firstly with aquariums and zoos to encourage data collection and to build grass roots understanding of the importance of natural light for environmental health. The organization stresses public education and pursues a scholarship program, vigorously seeking to develop post doctorate and multiple grant offerings.

Job Description

Our primary function is to provide scholarships, as a way to generate and coordinate research in a vital but under-represented field. Fundraisers serving as Volunteer Board Members will aid The Zoological Lighting Institute in identifying discerning philanthropists enthusiastic in supporting our unique mission.

Financial Board members are expected to play an active role in securing the financial resources necessary for 'ZLI' to achieve its mission. Board members are expected to leverage personal connections to help the cause, to aid the development committee and staff to identify and engage potential funders, as well as directly invest in The Zoological Lighting Institute’s work by making a personal contribution each year.

Of course, Board Members all have to embrace our mission to support science through the arts for wildlife conservation and animal welfare. Financial Board members are expected to responsibly represent The Zoological Lighting Institute in their communications to their respective communities and to advocate for its mission, programs, and services as appropriate.

Board terms last for three years and board members can serve for up to three consecutive terms.

PROFILE 1:

BOARD MEMBER - ADVOCACY (x3)

The Zoological Lighting Institute seeks an experienced advocacy professional who has planned and implemented advocacy strategies and campaigns to support an issue or cause. We seek a board leader to help cultivate the board’s leadership role in advocacy in support of staff as part of a broader commitment to increase awareness about the importance of our mission, influence public policy, and expand our reach. The ideal board candidate should have prior nonprofit board member experience or have received formal board training.

PROFILE 2:

BOARD MEMBER - FUNDRAISING (x3)

The Zoological Lighting Institute seeks an a well-connected leader who is passionate about our mission]and can leverage his/her networks and resources in support of efforts to positively impact the policy environment in which The Zoological Lighting Institute does its work. The ideal candidate has have a track-record of supporting Nonprofit work in an environmental, scientific or the artistic field with strong connections to decision makers who are in a position to positively impact The Zoological Lighting institute’s mission. The ideal board candidate should have prior nonprofit board member experience or have received formal board training.
