Howland Library
The Tour starts here.

Beacon, NY has become a popular tourist destination. The Dia Art Center and a main street lined with galleries, restaurants, shops and breweries have drawn thousands from the Tri-State area.

In response to this new interest, the Beacon Historical Society will be seizing upon this opportunity to enlighten those interested with the historic significance of our city. As a part of the New York State "Path Through History," we will be hosting our first Haunted Ghost Tour.

We are looking for actors to play four people who were significant to Beacon's history :

Catheryna Brett - The one of the earliest settlers of the Hudson Valley who many consider to be America's first businesswoman. Leaving NYC for the wilderness with her husband in the early 1700's she was widowed early on.

Alexander Hamilton - In 1781 Hamilton rented the DePeyster House in Beacon with his wife Elizabeth. They spent time there as newlyweds. Some records indicate that Hamilton also returned to the home while writing the Federalist Papers before the Ratifying Convention in Poughkeepsie.

Abiel T. LaForge - Union Civil War Captain. born on the Highland Mountains in Beacon. Became a business partner with Rowland H. Macy. Visited his hometown frequently and was very popular with the ladies.

Nancy Lamont - Librarian for the Howland Libarary (Beacon's first library, designed by Richard Morris Hunt and built in 1872) from 1907 to 1942.

Actors will have staged areas - walking with the tour will not be required. Each actor's presentation will be about 5-8 minutes.

We're looking for this to be an enjoyable and fun event.

Mission Statement

The Beacon Historical Society is an organization of people committed to preserving, procuring and presenting the City of Beacon's long heritage and history.

Description

The Beacon Historical Society was formed in 1976, with a mission to preserve, procure, and present Beacon’s heritage and history. To that end, the Society’s collections contain more than 2000 items, including books, prints, documents, photographs, postcards, paintings, maps and artifacts--all relating to the city of Beacon, NY.

From its inception in 1976, when a handful of preservation-minded citizens organized into a group to save Beacon’s unique history, the Beacon Historical Society has grown into an invaluable repository of our community’s heritage. Through donations of historic photographs, treasured family scrapbooks, old business ledgers, maps, and scores of other local items, Beacon residents have made us the Community’s Attic, a room of priceless collections that hold the memories of times past, ready to reveal our city’s story. Our collections have historic items not to be found elsewhere.
