Tutors fluent in English with a basic understanding of language functions, English grammar, etc. will assist our English Language Teacher, Dayra Gaitan, in running learning centers (in groups of 4 students) to prepare students for different learning levels and goals.

Tutors should also be good with kids, and have a teacher "attitude", they will need to run the centers as a teacher, it's not about just handing them a worksheet, they will need to explain the lesson, which I will have instructions for.

We plan on running these centers only Tuesdays and Thursdays, we need ONE TUTOR 1st, 2nd, 4th, & 5th periods, and TWO TUTORS for 3rd period (ON TUESDAYS AND THURSDAYS ONLY).

1st period: 8:01-9:05 AM (1 tutor needed)
2nd period: 9:10-10:14 AM (1 tutor needed)
3rd period: 10:52-11:56 AM (2 tutors needed)
4th period: 12:31-1:36 PM (1 tutor needed)
5th period:1:41-2:45 PM (1 tutor needed)

"I teach 7th and 8th grade English to students who are beginning English Language Learners and who come from very diverse linguistic and academic backgrounds. Teaching an effective whole-class lesson to a group of students who differ so significantly in their literacy and academic backgrounds, is very challenging. After many years of experience working this with student population, what I have found to be the most adequate way to meet my students’ individual needs, is designing lessons that can be delivered in smaller and highly structured groups, which I call Learning Centers. Each one of these centers (Vocabulary, Writing, Reading, and Computer Center), is dedicated to a language skill or language function where I can differentiate the standards, the learning tasks, and the assessments to meet my students’ ability level. The class is divided into 4 groups of 4-5 students, where the tutor directs the learning tasks. For each center, I create at least three different mini-lessons that are at the level of the respective student group. Due to the highly structure nature of these learning centers, tutors need to:

-Be fluent in English

-Be able to commit to a set schedule throughout the school year (Tuesdays and Thursdays only, 8-9, 9:15-10:15, 11:30-12:30, 12:30-1:30, OR 1:45-2:45).

-Possess a basic understanding of English grammar, language structures, and writing mechanics, reading fluency and comprehension, computer skills, etc.

-Be willing to run the learning centers as a teacher would: explaining and guiding, not doing the work for them, checking for understanding and adjusting the learning tasks as needed.

-Be caring

-Be patient and

-Enjoy working with kids!"

Mission Statement

Getting Students College Ready through Implementation of AVID Strategies!

Description

Granite Park Junior High serves a richly diverse population of students from over 40 countries, speaking over 60 languages. As an AVID National Demonstration Site of Distinction, we stand as the only school in the State of Utah to earn this distinction, demonstrating our school prepares students for the rigors of college. As a staff, we accomplish our mission statement of "Helping Students to Dream of College and Beyond" by embedding research-proven practices into each classroom, including Cornell Notes.

Our school strives to meet students where they are at academically, helping each student to achieve at least a year and a half of growth each school year. Students receive caring advisory teachers with who they see each day. At Granite Park, we create a safe, welcoming atmosphere for all students. Furthermore, students are rewarded for exemplary behavior, grades, and attendance through weekly student highlights, quarterly recognition assemblies, and other activities. Daily recognition of student efforts are facilitated through Grizz bucks: our school currency that is redeemable at a school store for prizes during lunches.
