4-H Tech Wizards Mentor at Alcott Elementary

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Oakland County 4-H

4-H Tech Wizards is a small group youth mentoring program that matches young people with positive adult role models from the fields of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.

Mentors commit to a weekly year-long match with 3 or 4 same-gendered youth. Matches meet at the school and activities are coordinated by 4-H staff members. Activities could include anything from making slime to building a hovercraft to investigating coding.

This site meets weekly on Mondays after school from 3:30-5:30. Matches continue during the summer break, but times and locations may vary. Additionally, mentors are strongly encouraged to attend the Mentoring Weekend retreat in the summer.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to create non-formal, experiential, educational opportunities designed to connect in-school learning with out-of-school time activities that help youth thrive in a complex and changing world. Our promise is that young people involved in Michigan 4-H are uniquely prepared to step up to the challenges of a complex and changing world. Young people develop the skills and assets needed to be successful today and in the future through experiences that are: youth directed and adult supported, connected to the cutting-edge research of the land grant universities, and supported by volunteers grounded in principles of positive youth development.

Description

4-H is a youth development program for ages 5-19. We use the experiential learning model to build life skills through participation in engaging and educational activities. These experiences happen in both long-term and short-term formats, including clubs, camps, mentoring programs, workshops and more.

In Oakland County, there are around 40 clubs serving youth with projects ranging from shooting sports, outdoor adventure, animal science, crafts, gardening, robotics, and more.

These programs don't exist without our volunteers! Volunteers can help to start a new club, help out with an existing club, host a workshop, or even host a six-week special interest club.
