PeaceGeeks is an award-winning Vancouver-based non-profit organization that operates around the globe through the use of technology to build the technological, communications and management capacities of grassroots organizations who work to promote peace, accountability and human rights. We develop partnerships with these organizations to provide meaningful support designed to increase their skills, effectiveness and impact. We see a world where everyone can leverage technology to make peace and human rights a lived reality. On March 2017, we won the renowned Google Impact Challenge, allowing us to have the necessary funding to launch an app that will make it easier for newcomers to access immigrant and refugee services in Vancouver, where they account for 40% of the population.

Position Overview:

Working in the financial reporting team, the Payroll Accountant is responsible for the execution of routine payroll processing for PeaceGeeks’ employees, as well as the timely payment of vendors. The successful candidate exhibits great attention to detail and prepares numbers with a high degree of accuracy. The Payroll Accountant reports to the Finance Committee Chair.

Responsibilities:

  • Use QuickBooks platform to process monthly/bi-weekly/semi-monthly (to be determined) payroll cycle for the organization’s employees
  • Take appropriate source deductions as required per Canadian law
  • Review and ensure accuracy of approved advances, expenses, and travel claims
  • Prepare month-end payroll journal entries and reporting integrating into the QuickBooks system
  • Maintain employee records, ensure that employee changes are entered correctly and made on a timely basis
  • File necessary tax reports
  • Review and verify vendor invoices and cheque requests
  • Sort and code vendor invoices according to project budget
  • Enter vendor invoices into QuickBooks system

Qualifications:

  • 1+ years of experience in an accounting or financial reporting role
  • Experience working in the payroll function of an organization, with a working knowledge of the required source deductions under Canadian employment law, including CPP, EI, and vacation pay.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Google Suite, and QuickBooks
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to take work effectively on a team
  • Ability to handle confidential information and maintain a high degree of ethics

Time Commitment

Approximately 15 hours per fiscal quarter; 4-5 hours per month
