Volunteers in this program are available to provide remote and in-person companionship and support to isolated cancer patients at medical appointments or by telephone.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Accompany Bronx breast cancer patients to and from treatment or medical appointments at
Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx via car service or public transportation*
* Be an adherence treatment couch and empower patients to discuss any concerns with their
oncology team.
* Provide pre-appointment and post-appointment supportive phone calls to the patient.
* Foster a caring and compassionate relationship with cancer patients assigned or during outreach.
* Participate in other activities that are important to making the program effective, such as attending
volunteer meetings, continuing education, and training workshops.
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS/REQUIREMENTS:
* Must be former cancer patients/survivors. (Patients usually request companions that have lived
through the same experience as them.)
* Must commit to volunteering for a minimum of one- year
* Flexible schedule during the daytime hours (9am-5pm) Monday through Friday
* Must complete all training satisfactorily including medical clearance and background check
* Be available for assignments or notify Buddy Coordinator of schedule change
* Maintain good relationships with patients, health professionals at Montefiore and BOLD staff
