About St Francis Animal Rescue

Location:

1925 S. Tamiami Trail, Venice, FL 34293, US

Mission Statement

We are a no-kill kitten and cat shelter whose objective is to rescue abandoned, unwanted cats and kittens in our community and to provide them with shelter, food, medical care and love for their entire lives or until we can find them responsible, loving homes through adoption. We support local spay/neuter programs and educate people about responsible pet ownership.

Description

St. Francis Animal Rescue (SFAR) started in 1992,when a group of volunteers banded together to feed and spay/neuter a large colony of feral cats living at the North Jetty in Nokomis, FL. As their efforts grew, they quickly realized that the need to help stray, homeless, unwanted and abandoned cats was widespread. As a result, SFAR became a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization in 1993.

Three years later, property was purchased at 1925 S. Tamiami Trail in Venice, FL to house a mostly cageless, no-kill adoption center and thrift store.

In 2005, the thrift store relocated to provide space for a new adoption room, kitten room and office. Renovations have continued and have included a new infirmary and intake room. All of the improvements are needed to maintain a comfortable and sanitary facility for the cats.

We have cats and kittens available for adoption, cats and kittens in foster homes, resident cats, and feral colonies for whom we provide food. The number of cats St Francis cares for varies from 400 to 500 annually. The only paid staff are cleaners and our shelter manager. Everyone else volunteers their time and love so we can maximize our donations to care for the cats and kittens.
