The Somali Youth & Family club supports refugee and immigrant families in King County by providing a number of free resources including afterschool tutoring and homework support.

Many of our students come from non-English speaking households so our program offers homework support that many of their families are unable to offer due to language barriers. Our program not only works with students on homework but through games and activities, helps students strengthen their math and reading skills.

Our afterschool tutoring center at Pine Ridge Apartments runs Tuesday and Thursdays from 4-6pm. We are especially looking for volunteers who can commit to 2 hours at least one day per week consistently through the school year. We are also seeking flexible substitute tutors who can come on an as needed basis. Applications to be a tutor are accepted throughout the year. Training and support will be provided. The program is generally closed during school holidays.

Skills

  • Tutoring: Patience and a positive, friendly attitude are a must. Group tutoring will focus on either Reading or Mathematics instruction at the elementary or lower middle-school levels.

Mission Statement

SYFC is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing essential services to Somali and other underserved populations in King County.

Description

Built by Immigrants, Refugees and Volunteers, SYFC has challenged itself to give back to those groups through our Housing, Education, Advocacy and Community Engagement programs. For over a decade we have built leaders and promoted productive participation in an increasingly diverse society.

Education is enrichment and we engage students with opportunities that inspire young people to become life long learners. We offer security to those who are facing homelessness or displacement from our talented Case Managers in Housing. SYFC Advocates by going out into our community and getting their needs met. We Engage Communities by frequently hosting events where we gather and collaborate to craft solutions to everyday problems.

We work together to build a network that offers a better and more sustainable quality of life. Each department is constantly growing and stands as a testament to the hard work the people of SYFC put into this organization every day.
