Who are we? The Young Center for Immigrant Children's Rights is a non-profit organization whose mission is to advocate for the rights of unaccompanied immigrant children. The Young Center provides volunteer Child Advocates (guardians ad litem) for trafficking victims and unaccompanied immigrant children. We serve children from our Chicago, Harlingen, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix, San Antonio, and Virginia offices.

Who are our Child Advocates? Our Child Advocates are adults who volunteer to spend time with and advocate on behalf of an individual unaccompanied immigrant child while he or she is in federal custody and subject to immigration proceedings. We welcome volunteers from all cultures, professions, races, ethnicities and social backgrounds.

How can I become a Child Advocate? Before being assigned, Advocates must apply to attend a two-day training session. New volunteers must be 21 years old, have their own transportation, undergo a federal and state background check, and be willing to commit approximately one hour per week to visit with an unaccompanied child. Once assigned to an individual child, each Advocate receives continuing training, support, and supervision from the Young Center.

The Young Center is currently recruiting new Child Advocates in and around the Shenandoah Valley who speak Spanish and French for a two-day training on October 14 and 15, 2017.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights is to promote the best interests of unaccompanied immigrant children with due regard to the child’s expressed wishes, according to the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Young Center is a champion for the best interests of children who arrive in the United States on their own, from all corners of the world. We serve as trusted allies for these children by accompanying them through court proceedings, advocating for their best interests, and standing for the creation of a dedicated juvenile immigrant justice system that ensures the safety and well-being of every child.

Description

The Young Center provides Child Advocates for unaccompanied immigrant children in federal custody. Our model uses volunteer Child Advocates who undergo a Young Center training, meet with a child on a weekly basis, and learn the child’s story, all supervised and supported by Young Center staff.
