We are looking for volunteers to help with this project. The work involves adding labels to books and assembling the small libraries. We will drop off and pick up the materials so that you can work at home on your own schedule. Thanks for your consideration. --Mike

Create ~150 small home libraries of bilingual developmental, read-aloud, and picture books for preschool children in the homes of local Hispanic families in the Columbia, SC, and Waxhaw, NC communities. The goal of this project is to improve the school readiness of Hispanic children ages 4 and 5 while instilling in them a love for reading and books.

Bilingual books have been chosen so that non-English speaking Hispanic parents and their English-speaking school-age children are both able to read aloud to the preschool children in the home. This serves to improve their language skills while strengthening the emotional bonds between the family members.

To provide libraries to communities in need

Description

Reading Is Power International Inc. is an all-volunteer, non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation that provides small libraries to communities in need. The libraries are self-contained and include books, a cabinet, and a simple card-based checkout and cataloging system. The typical library consists of approximately 100 to 1000 books.
