The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center is hosting a Project Owlnet site, part of a network of sites scattered throughout the US and Canada that track the migration and population changes of Northern Saw-whet Owls. These tiny owls migrate from their breeding grounds in Canadian boreal forests to winter grounds in the southern United States.
Volunteers will assist with banding and measuring the owls. Volunteers will work from after sunset until approximately midnight. Volunteers ages 12+ are welcome (volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a participating adult). We prefer volunteers who can stay the whole time (until midnight), but we can accommodate a few volunteers per evening who need to leave early (should be able to stay until at least 9:30pm).
The exact start and end dates will vary somewhat depending on when the owls start their migrations, but we plan to work most nights from mid-October through late November. Sampling may be cancelled due to weather.
