The Backside Learning Center's Front Runners Program offers an after school program focusing on academic, social, and emotional development for children of equine workers at Churchill Downs and an English-as-a-Second Language class for parents.
Volunteers in the early childhood education classroom will work with young children ages 2-4 to provide a learning experience focusing on motor skill, language, social development.
Required Skills: Spanish skills are very helpful, but not required. Flexible, creative, reliable, patient, and comfortable working with children of this age group.
Schedule: 5:30-7 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We ask that volunteers interested commit to tutoring at least once a week on either of the two days for at least 2 months.

Description
The Backside Learning Center provides free educational services to the men and women who work with the thoroughberd horses in the barn area, or backside, of Churchill Downs and Trackside in Louisville, KY. Our programming includes English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL), technology workshops, citizenship tutoring, art class, and music class. All of our classes & tutoring depend on volunteers. Family Education Program focusing on afterschool homework assistance for equine workers' children,
Note: BLC hours are between 9:00 am-8:00 pm Monday thru Friday. Days, times and frequency of direct service will fall between these hours but will depend upon the work schedule and availability of students and volunteers.
