The Big Sort is a series of sorting events that occur from November 1st to March 15th each year. Dates are set up for group to come to our office to sort, count, and pack the collections of pairs that come in, so that the agencies can come to pick up their boxes.
This is a TEAM event, with your group having between 5 - 20 people, from your office, community group, sorority, company, sports or dance team, and the like. This is not an individual person opportunity at this point.
The task involves physically counting and sorting the pairs, tracking the numbers, and helping to get the boxes to the curb for agencies if they come to pick them up. The event is set up by the group leader, committing to a number of volunteers for 2-3 hours of sorting.
This is a great opportunity for office groups, community service organizations, and the like. Participant minimum age is 18 years old.

Mission Statement
Mittens for Detroit collects, purchases, and distributes new, unused mittens and gloves for kids, teens and adults in need in Detroit, Michigan and other underserved cities. Since 2010, more than 1/4-millions pairs have been collected from public donation and distributed through partner agencies, organizations, schools, shelters, and the like. With the support of the community, an average of 30,000 new, warm pairs are distributed every year.
Description
Founded in 2010, Mittens for Detroit is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that collects, purchases, and distributes new, warm mittens and gloves for children, teens, and adults in need in Detroit, Michigan and other underserved cities. Currently, our Distribution Partners are located in Detroit, Hamtramck, Highland Park, Dearborn, and Pontiac. From October 1st through January 10th each year, pairs are donated in public and private collections. These are then sorted, counted, and packed by amazing volunteers in The Big Sort. Our Distribution Partner network of art agencies, organizations, schools, shelters, senior centers, veterans organizations, and the like then pick up their boxes of pairs for distribution to their guests, families, students, residents, and so on. More than one-quarter million pairs of new mittens and gloves have been collected and distributed since 2010.
