Mission Statement

New Women New Yorkers provides workforce development and other programs to empower immigrant women to obtain meaningful employment or pursue higher education in NYC, and offers a safe, inclusive space where immigrant women can build community and share their stories.

Description

Half of NYC’s approximately 3 million immigrants are women, and immigrant women are the mothers of the majority of children born every year. Still, one in three immigrant women who have received their education in another country are unemployed. Many more remain employed in low-wage or temporary positions regardless of their skill set. The pandemic has exacerbated the economic challenges immigrant women face, as they are both in essential jobs and employed in industries that have been hard-hit by business closures and the economic slowdown.

New Women New Yorkers provides innovative, year-round programming in two key areas:

Workforce development: Current programming includes our LEAD, We Speak We LEAD, and Bridge to LEAD job readiness training series, group practice and networking sessions in partnership with companies, individual support in the form of resume review, phone screening interviews, and career counseling, employer partnerships, and other referral and placement services.

Community building, community education, and storytelling: Current programming include Community Mixers, Community Education Workshops, Community Calls, our storytelling group in partnership with The Moth, Writing the Self, and Real People. Real Lives. Women Immigrants of New York.
