The Literacy Council is seeking a Community Writer-in-Residence.
The length of the residency and schedules are determined upon individual basis. If seeking college/university credit, please contact your advisor. Longer residencies will require more involvement in community outreach work for The Literacy Council.
Applicants must provide a proposal, to include:
· CV/resume
· Statement of purpose outlining project, residency, and career goals (max 1000 words)
· Writing sample of approximately 1,500 words
The Community Writer in Residence will receive:
- Free work space Monday-Thursday 9a-3p, Fridays 9a-5p
- Dedicated laptop
- Access to The Literacy Councils’ resources
- Training on Wilson Reading Program
The Community Writer in Residence responsibilities:
- Draft articles for the local newspaper for The Literacy Council (reviewed and approved by Executive Director for publishing)
- Opportunity for publication in the Laurel Magazine
- Social media posts
- Opportunity to jumpstart The Literacy Council Residence Blog
- Participate in the After School Enrichment program or Individual tutoring
- Follow The Literacy Council’s policies and procedures
- Provide own transportation
- Positive ambassador for The Literacy Council
- Other responsibilities determined on individual basis

The mission of the Literacy Council of Highlands is to enrich lives and expand the knowledge of children, adults and families in Macon County through diverse educational programs that advance literacy in its many forms and to promote lifelong learning, which results in an informed and empowered community.
Description
The Literacy Council of Highlands was incorporated in November of 1993. Now, more than two decades later, The Literacy Council serves hundreds of students per month.
