Assisting the bus driver and passengers while volunteering on the SafeRide bus gives you the opportunity to aid the reduction of drunk driving accidents, which occur far too often. Each passenger assisted could be one life saved from getting into a potential accident and contributes to keeping our community safe. SafeRide also provides the opportunity to build crisis management skills, in the case of an escalated disagreement on the bus. Volunteers are not obligated nor expected to physically intervene but take control of the situation verbally. Volunteering for SafeRide is a great way to help make the community safer without making a considerable time commitment or getting in the way of other daily activities.

Mission Statement

Our goal is to promote safety in the bar and college environment, eliminating one drunk driving incident at a time.

Description

The SafeRide bus obtains passengers from bars such as Shooters, the Gypsy Nickel, and the Gate and provides a safe ride to their home. The volunteers ride the bus, obtain the addresses from passengers as they enter the bus and provide them to the bus driver where he can then proceed to drop the passengers off. Volunteers record the number of passengers that board the bus and any instances that occur during the duration of the night. Volunteers also provide assistance such as controlling certain situations to provide a safe environment and assisting in exit from the bus if necessary.
