You can help veterans or military family members step into civilian life. You will serve in the "Operation: Veteran Connect (OVC)" program to get things done by helping Tampa Bay area veterans. Seniors in Service of Tampa Bay, in partnership with James A. Haley Veterans Hospital, seeks to engage veterans and members of military families as OVC volunteers to help other veterans and military families access benefits and services. Volunteers serving through Operation: Veteran Connect bring their own talents and gain valuable new skills to support the VA’s exciting, new Whole Health for Life initiative, an approach to health care that empowers people to take charge of their well-being and live their life to the fullest.

Whole Health Volunteer Partner Assistant

As a volunteer serving through Operation: Veteran Connect, you will gain valuable skills while giving back to your community. In this highly visible role, the volunteer will support the VA Hospital's Whole Health initiative. Volunteers will be trained to serve Veterans at the VA Hospital, Primary Care Clinic and at the Whole Health Office. Volunteer duties include helping Veterans:

  • Assist with facilitation of different health events like the Whole Health Orientation, Introduction to Whole Health, and Taking Charge of My Life and Health.
  • Support with in-service, training, consultative and other professional activities.
  • Assistance with orienting Veterans to the traditional VA services as well as the growing list of available Whole Health services and programs.
  • Assistance with advocating any effective Complementary and Integrative Health services that will aid the Veteran in achieving SMART health goals and progress with their Personal Health Plan.
  • Help establish support networks in the Tampa community enabling the Veteran to choose from both VA and non-VA services in support of SMART health goals

Position Requirements:

  • Veteran or Military Family Member
  • Flexible Monday thru Friday between 8:30 am- 4:30 pm
  • High school graduate or GED recipient
  • Member must pass a TB Tine test
  • Member must pass a National Criminal History Background check to include an FBI background check via fingerprints, a local background check, and their name run through the National Sex Offender database ( www.nsopw.gov). This is contingent on any Member beginning their service year.

Programs Offered Through Seniors in Service:


Foster Grandparent Program (FGP)

  • The Foster Grandparent Program recruits senior volunteers (55+) to go into schools and after-school programs to mentor at-risk and special needs children and provide them with one-on-one, individualized attention


Senior Companion Program (SCP)

  • The Senior Companion Program recruits senior volunteers (55+) to go into the homes of homebound, elderly clients and provide them with companionship and assistance.


Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP)

  • The RSVP Program recruits senior volunteers(55+) to participate more fully in the life of the community through volunteer service. The program matches the considerable wealth of knowledge, skills, and experience of this vital and rapidly growing age group with the addressing of critical needs and unresolved issues in our community.


Operation Veteran Connect

  • Provides companionship to veterans, enabling them to live independently. Supports the VA in supporting providing Whole Health support to veterans.
