UPDATE ON OCTOBER 6: The "Sift the Sand" morning session is now totally full. We do need more people for the second shift, from 1:00 to 4:00, though!!
Please wear shoes, sunscreen, and layers. Bring a water bottle and work gloves if you have them. (We'll have water and disposable gloves, too.) No little kids or dogs, please! We'll be working in teams and you won't be able to watch them or keep them out of the way of the shovels, etc.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On Sunday, October 8, 2017, teams of volunteers will deep-clean Albany Beach by sifting toxic microplastics out of the sand to prevent them from leaching into San Francisco Bay.
This technique, using static-charge filtration screens that attract tiny microplastics, is being used on beaches around the world. "Sift the Sand" will be the first large-scale effort in the East Bay.
We need volunteers from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and/or 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. (Some people are doing both shifts!) To register, email albanycadogs@gmail.com or call 510-473-2626. (Registering will help us track how many people we have for each shift.)
This free, hands-on workshop is a rare opportunity to learn beach restoration techniques from Marc Ward of Sea Turtles Forever. Ward is the inventor of the patented, static charge filtration screen and an expert on protecting marine life and restoring habitat.
We clean the beach to clean the oceans. Join us!
"Sift the Sand" is coordinated by Albany Landfill Dog Owners Group (ALDOG), which is fiscally sponsored by Point Isabel Dog Owners group. The event is in collaboration with the East Bay Regional Park District and Sea Turtles Forever, and funded by a 2017 Community Stewardship Grant to ALDOG from the Alameda Countywide Clean Water Program.
