Fall 2020 will run from September 12th to December 12th; to maintain safety for our community, we will be holding all of our classes virtually. We will be offering two class focuses, "fiction" and "nonfiction", as well as, two class times to choose from, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. All of our classes will be taught by instructors, using digital cameras, photo editing software, and creativity as our tools.

We are a free weekly photography mentoring program for underserved Bay Area youth, pairing each youth one-on-one with an adult volunteer mentor in order to learn photography. Youth: Creative young people, ages 11 -18, whose backgrounds may include foster care, former homelessness or current low-income living situations. Volunteers: Mentors come to us from many different professions, but all mentors share a background in photography and a commitment to youth and education.

About First Exposures

PO Box 881971, San Francisco, CA 94188, US

Mission Statement

First Exposures: Empowering Youth Through Photography is a special interest mentoring program where academic skills and life skills are developed by combining the benefits of mentoring relationships with art education. The volunteer mentors are professional, commercial and fine art photographers with a commitment to youth and to education. Their students are creative young people, aged 11 -18, with backgrounds which include homelessness or low-income living situations. The students and mentors work together in one-to-one partnerships in a group setting. First Exposures fosters supportive intergenerational relationships in a stimulating environment of active learning.

Volunteer mentors work every Saturday of the Academic year with the youth in our program for 5 hours each week. There are various levels of commitment, so please contact us with questions and for an application.
