The Boys & Girls Club of Harlem’s (BGCHarlem) mission is to provide access and opportunity for youth to reach their full potential as responsible members of the community. We believe that success is within reach of every young person that walks through our doors. Our kids benefit from trained, caring professional staff and volunteers who help them take control of their lives, envision productive futures and reach the goals. Core to this is the development of strong character and leadership skills and we seek your support to both models and encourage them as a volunteer group mentor for our Girls mentoring program.

Our Girls mentoring program provides girls ages 8-17, with the skills to develop positive self-esteem, and adopt healthy lifestyle habits. Weekly participants engage in discussions on a range of topics that include media influences on females, dating relationships, and health prevention and education. Volunteers, with the support of BGCHarlem staff, will help to facilitate these discussions over a 10-week session, guiding youth through a curriculum that builds competencies in:

  • Understanding and implementing the Boys and Girls Club of Harlem program
  • Having in-depth and potentially uncomfortable conversations about challenges facing teens today
  • Discussing nutrition, cooking and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Our Boys Mentoring program uses interactive activities to educate males 8-12 and 13-17 on the critical issues that young men face including decision making, wellness, careers and employment, relationships, and self-esteem

This opportunity is on Monday evenings.

Mission Statement

Our Mission Statement is to provide access and opportunities for youth to reach their full potential as responsible members of the community

Description

BGCHarlem was founded in 1980 with the purpose of providing a safe, positive, and supportive place for youth which fosters learning and quality relationships, which can have a significant impact on their lives. Also of paramount importance at the time, BGCHarlem founders set out to create a community-focused organization that would uphold high ethical standards in all areas, especially in overseeing organizational finances, reporting data on membership and community outreach efforts, while being good stewards of donor dollars and representing itself to the public with the highest of standards.

Since the Club's founding it has been at the forefront of youth development in the community. BGCHarlem maintains a commitment to providing after-school access to character-building, educational programming and opportunities otherwise unavailable to the Harlem youth (ages 6-18) that we service. BGCHarlem fosters a safe environment where our young people can be themselves, have fun and, engage in interesting, constructive activities that channelyouthful energy into challenging pursuits.

Today, over 500 at-risk boys and girls are taking advantage of the programs, activities, and services provided by the Boys & Girls Club of Harlem. They benefit from trained, caring professional staff and volunteers who help young people take control of their lives, envision productive futures, and reach their goals at locations across Harlem.
