The Alzheimer's caregiver support group is an open gathering of individuals with common problems and needs who come together to share their feelings, thoughts and experiences in an effort to better cope with the role of care-giving for a loved one with dementia. The facilitator needs to have had experience with dementia as a family member or health care provider. They must have good listening skills and effective communication skills in creating a safe environment where participants' thoughts and feelings are valued and group members are treated with fairness, equity and respect. The Alzheimer's Association provides initial and ongoing training to facilitators. A commitment of at least one year is expected.
