Transportation Assistance for Breast Cancer Treatments

ORGANIZATION: ECDC African Community Center -DC

  • 1 person is interested

Immigrants and refugees often have difficulty accessing health care services, including preventive medicine, and difficulty completing care once diagnosed, due to barriers such as affording and accessing transportation, language and cultural barriers to understanding the importance of continued care, and confusion when transitioning between facilities for ongoing services. ECDC is partnering with the Susan G. Komen Foundation to implement Project PATH (Patient Access to Health)and address these barriers to breast cancer treatment for refugee and immigrant populations in Northern Virginia.

Transportation has been identified as a significant barrier preventing these vulnerable women from accessing and continuing through breast cancer treatment, and ECDC is seeking volunteer support to overcome this obstacle. We are currently building a list of trained and cleared volunteers to help on an as-needed basis. Cleared volunteers will be added to a list and will be periodically contacted to sign-up for the specific days and times needed.

The women being assisted live and are being assisted in Northern Virginia, concentrated around Alexandria. Appointments would take place mostly on weekdays, but weekends would be possible as well. Each appointment would require 3-4 hours for travel, appointment time, and returning the woman home.

A background check, driving record, and available vehicle are required.

If interested in providing vulnerable immigrant women potentially life saving assistance, please contact volunteer@ecdcus.org for next steps.
