About Robert Louis Stevenson Museum

Location:

1490 Library Lane, St. Helena, CA 94574, US

Mission Statement

The Robert Louis Stevenson Museum is dedicated to honoring the life and literary legacy of the author. Held in trust is a valued collection of Stevenson artifacts and manuscripts, preserved for the benefit of enriching present and future generations.

Through creative programs, displays and research opportunities, the museum educates and increases awareness of RLS and his works.

Description

The Robert Louis Stevenson Museum houses the largest museum collection in the world devoted to the famed author. Regularly open to the public since 1969, the RLSM celebrates the life, times and works of Robert Louis Stevenson - known for such classics as TreasureIsland, Kidnapped, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and A Child's Garden of Verses.

The RLSM is located in St. Helena, in the heart of the wine country, thanks to our founders Norman and Charlotte Strouse. Dedicated Stevensoniana collectors, their reading of Stevenson's book the Silverado Squatters inspired them to retire to the area. The book is Stevenson's account of his 1880 honeymoon, spent in an abandoned bunkhouse at the old Silverado Mine on the slope of Mount St. Helena.

In 1979 the museum moved to permanent quarters in the new St. Helena Public Library building. A"jewel box" type of museum, it works at all levels, for eager six-year-olds as well as bibliophiles and scholars.

Admission is free and donations are gratefully accepted.
