TWO VOLUNTEER POSITIONS AVAILABLE
General Service Description
The Intake Volunteer is an essential member of the volunteer team that supports Adult Literacy XPRIZE Events. The Intake Volunteer supports adult learners to use a specialized Android App that will be downloaded on their mobile devices. The App verifies eligibility for continued participation in the program. The Intake Volunteer must be accommodating; positioning mobile technology as a tool for learning rather than a barrier to learning.
The Volunteer Recruiter position enrolls adult learners to participate in the XPRIZE Testing Days by sharing information and incentives. The Volunteer Recruiter represents nonprofit partners at onsite locations, such as adult learning schools, or offsite locations such as community events or community canvassing.
About the Adult Literacy XPRIZE
The Barbara Bush Foundation Adult Literacy XPRIZE is a large-scale effort to address the challenge of low literacy in the United States and globally. This project seeks to identify mobile learning applications that will help low-literacy adults attain basic literacy skills in just one year. To test proposed software solutions in three major metropolitan areas-Dallas, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia, XPRIZE and its local partners in each metropolitan region will administer standardized literacy assessments to adult learners to determine eligibility and pre-intervention scores.
The Field Test
The XPRIZE Field Test is a period beginning July 2017 through October 2018, which includes adult learner recruitment, intake, mobile software distribution and learner testing. XPRIZE and its local partners will host events to administer standardized literacy assessments to adult learners (if never taken before) to determine learner eligibility and literacy scores. Learners will be provided different mobile learning solutions to utilize for one year before receiving a post-test to determine gains achieved in literacy.
Time Commitment
This position requires a four-month commitment of 3-4 hours every week. If an individual is not able to make a longer commitment, there are volunteer opportunities available weekly allowing for a more customized schedule.
