MOI offers Storytelling and Bookmaking field trips for 2nd-4th classes in the Twin Cities. During our field trips, students will learn about the elements of a story while collaborating in small and large groups. At the end of the field trip, students are invited to finish the story - which the group has left at a cliffhanger ending. The field trip teaches students about collaboration, self-editing, the bookmaking process and elements of successful storytelling. Volunteers, including an illustrator, work with student authors to complete and publish a book within two hours.
As a volunteer, you can work in several roles to help with the field trips. If you have some experience as an illustrator, you can work with the students to create several illustrations for their book. As a support volunteer you would work directly with small groups of students to write their book. The typist volunteer transcribes the students' story real time on a laptop in an Adobe InDesign template while the students invent the story aloud. You can play a different role each time you volunteer to see which you enjoy the most.
Field trips last 2 hours and take place on Wednesday and Friday mornings.
