SEEKING RESEARCH ASSISTANT VOLUNTEERS
for UC Berkeley/UCSF Study of stress, weight and health
As a Research Assistant you will gain inside knowledge of how research addressing complex public health issues is carried out:
- You will undergo extensive training to support a range of critical study functions in a fun, dynamic, highly collaborative and immersive work environment
- You will cultivate key clinical research skills - helping with recruitment, data collection through clinic and home visits, and data management
- You will use study databases to track and follow-up with participants and work with our committed team of study coordinators, post-doctoral scholars, and principal investigators to troubleshoot, refine, and implement study procedures
This is relevant for people interested in public health, psychology, or medicine. It would be an excellent opportunity for anyone looking to enhance their research repertoire, explore new pathways in applied research, take their career in a different direction or pursue graduate or medical school. Post-baccalaureate students are encouraged to apply.
Location: Our research site is The Nutrition Policy Institute in downtown Berkeley.
Requirements: You should be curious, detail-oriented, communicative, and highly organized. You should be prepared to tackle challenges, learn new things, and ask lots of questions. Past research experience is not required, but applicants must have a strong willingness to learn research methods and a passion for science and health.
Applicants interested in participating in field work must be willing and able to travel within a 60-mile radius from our Berkeley location to conduct home visits in neighboring communities. Visits are done in teams of two using study resources- no personal vehicles required but Driver’s License strongly preferred even if not driving.
Time Commitment: At least 8-10 hours per week for a minimum of six months. Hours are flexible and can be done Monday through Saturday between 9 AM and 8 PM. We can work with you to craft a schedule that fits your current needs and career trajectory.
Preference will be given to candidates who can commit up to one year and who are willing to work at night and on the weekends to recruit, collect data or work on research.
To Apply: Please send your résumé and a brief cover letter describing your interests, relevant coursework/experience, and availability to Robin Friebur at rfriebur@berkeley.edu

About Berkeley School of Public Health
Location:

Mission Statement
The UC Berkeley School of Public Health and UC San Francisco School of Medicine are conducting a longitudinal study on how childhood stress, eating behavior, and nutrition impact adult health, cellular aging, and the health of offspring. NGHS is a follow-up study to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Growth and Health Study taking place from 1987 to 1997. NGHS aims to look at how stress affects women's nutrition, health, and weight. In addition, the project focuses on factors related to children's weight, the transmission of stress across generations, and the correlation between race and health.
Description
The NGHS is housed within the Nutrition Policy Institute. NPI conducts and evaluates research related to the impact of nutrition and physical activity on public health. NPI prizes research that provides a strong basis for public policies that can eliminate health disparities, especially those stemming from lack of access to healthy foods and opportunities for physical activity.
