Journey Out is a 501(c)3 non-profit, non-governmental organization, and our mission is "to help victims of commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking leave a life of abuse and violence, overcome their fears, and empower them to reach their full potential and achieve their goals'. Our overarching goals are two-fold: first, deliver the critical services and support needed to break free from the abuse and violence of sex trafficking and rebuild a life; and second, to ensure that no one enters "the life".

We also carry out preventative efforts, which includes community education, and training of those in law enforcement, education, social work; as well as others who can play a pertinent role in mitigating trafficking.

In 2015 we went through a period of re-branding, which included a name change from the Mary Magdalene Project. We are still growing and restructuring of the Board of Directors, is part of that process.

WHAT WE ARE SEEKING:
We seek accomplished and energetic candidates of any background for our board of trustees, who are inspired by our mission. Successful candidates will bring an understanding of nonprofit governance, and a commitment to the long-term sustainability of Journey Out and its mission.

A strong Board will possess a wide spectrum of skills and traits among its trustees, including:

Mission Statement

The Mary Magdalene Project is a nonprofit organization that helps women who are victimized by Domestic Sex Trafficking permanently exit the lifestyle.

Description

The Mary Magdalene Project has programs that help women and girls out of domestic sex trafficking

Long Term Residential Recovery Home: Year long program where women receive a safe place to live while receiving individual and group therapy, life and social skills, dental and health care, job training for a career that pays a living wage, budget and money management and family reunification services.

Drop In Center: a harm-reduction model intervention providing services such as a Prostitution Diversion Program with the LA City Attorney, recovery groups, individual therapy, HIV education and condoms, hygiene kits, snacks and beverages, clean air conditioned place to relax and case management & referrals.

Street Outreach is performed on the prostitution tracks of the San Fernando Valley. Our Outreach Team engage with individuals who are out on the tracks. We talk to them about the MMP programs and services, how we can assist them out of "the life", and let them know we are an agency that cares and can help when they are ready.

DOMESTIC MINOR SEX TRAFFICKING PROGRAM: The Mary Magdalene Project utilizes adult survivors of sex trafficking to provide prevention and intervention services to commercially sexually exploited children and children who are at risk of being victimized

PREVENTION The My Life My Choice program is an exploitation prevention curriculum which is being conducted throughout Los Angeles County at community centers and wrap-around facilities. MMP adult survivors co-facilitate groups that discuss issues pertaining to tactics of pimps and traffickers. Other prevention efforts include community education and raising awareness about the issues of domestic minor sex trafficking at community events, schools and universities.

INTERVENTION Mentoring - MMP survivors provide intense one-on-one mentorship to girls who are entrenched in the lifestyle. They offer hope as a living example that it is possible to get out and stay out. They guide girls toward the realization that they are victims, not perpetrators, and help them understand the tactics and manipulation used to keep them in the world of commercial sexual exploitation and under control of pimps and traffickers. Guidance from survivors provides insight and understanding for girls who previously have been isolated with little hope of finding a new way of life.

COMMUNITY AWARENESS: The MMP is raising awareness and educating the community about the commercial sexual exploitation (CSEC) of women and children in order to create understanding and realization of the enormity of the problem that exists nationwide. Universities, partner agencies, and parents are some of the groups that have been educated on the issues of CSEC by MMP survivors and staff. Parental education includes increasing awareness about indicators and prevention along with internet abuses and safety.
