Scribes Book Launch
Scribes of Brown Middle School show off their book, REMIX: Atlanta History

We're looking for writers, authors, journalists, poets, English or journalism majors, or anyone who just loves reading, writing and working with kids. Our Scribes program teaches middle school students how to write their own fictional stories based on a theme we give them every year. We then publish their stories in a book.

Our Scribes @ Brown Middle School runs from Sept. 13 - December 13, 2017
Our Scribes @ KIPP STRIVE Academy runs from Jan. 17 - April 18, 2018

Mission Statement

The mission of the Wren’s Nest is to preserve the legacy of writer/author, Joel Chandler Harris and the heritage of African American folklore. We offer our Scribes student writing program, and our professional storytellers perform Brer Rabbit stories for more than 8,000 visitors each year.

Description

The Wren’s Nest is the historic home of Joel Chandler Harris, the journalist who penned the Brer Rabbit tales in the late 19 th century. The Brer Rabbit stories originated in Africa centuries ago. In the United States, the stories were often told by the enslaved people on southern plantations. Harris grew up hearing the Brer Rabbit stories while working on a plantation as a teenager, and then wrote the stories down as an adult. The stories revolutionized children’s literature and helped legitimize African American folklore. Joel Chandler Harris recognized the importance of the oral tradition and the power of capturing an individual’s voice.

The Wren’s Nest is open for tours 10 a.m. - 2:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. The home has been a museum since 1913, thanks to fundraising efforts by Andrew Carnegie, President Theodore Roosevelt, and the children of Atlanta City Schools.
