Volunteers make Zoo events possible!
- Provide a friendly welcome to our guests!
- Be part of a fun team of volunteers that make it all happen
- Help raise money to keep your Zoo strong!
Volunteer one time only or become a regular member of the Zoo event crew. Flexibility is key, in terms of schedule and your willingness to help where needed. Roles vary depending on the event, but possibilities include bartending, checking IDs, operating the Train/Carousel (pre-training required), Goat Yard attendant, registration, amusements like bounce house, face painting, ticket sales, gate greeting, etc.
Right now, we're recruiting for Zoo Run Run (9/24 plus preparation days the week prior), Halloween at the Zoo (10/29 plus preparation days), and Zoo Lights (11/24 - 1/1 - Thursdays through Sundays plus 12/26 and 12/27 and three special events throughout that timeframe).
Orientation & pre-training not required (except Train/Carousel), but we encourage attendance at an orientation if you're planning to assist at multiple events. Teams are welcome, with team size dependent on the event.

Description
We are proud to be one of only a few admission-free, community-supported zoos across the country. Thank you for supporting our mission to conserve and protect the wonders of the living natural world.
On June 30, 1904, Col. William and Anna Vilas gave a large tract of land to the Madison Park and Pleasure Drive Association "for the uses and purposes of a public park and pleasure ground." The park was named in memory of the Vilas’ son, Henry, who died at a young age due to complications from diabetes. In 1911, the first animal exhibits were created, representing the beginning of Henry Vilas Zoo. In what has proved to be a defining and truly visionary move, the Vilas family stipulated the park be free to the public. As the zoo developed within the park, it too remained free thanks to community support.
The Henry Vilas Zoo is one of ten remaining free zoos in North America. As an accredited AZA ( Association of Zoos & Aquariums) zoo, our mission is to conserve and protect the wonders of the natural living world.
