Purpose: The purpose of our ESL program at the Mission of Saint Joan of Arc is to provide members from our community the opportunity to learn English. We want to empower our students to feel confident reading, writing, and speaking with others in English in order to broaden their opportunities.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Be punctual to your scheduled class; if possible arrive a few minutes early to ensure you are ready to teach.
- Prepare lesson plans and materials to fit the needs of your students. You will be provided with a textbook, workbook and the first days' lesson plans.
- If you know you will not be able to make it to a class in advance let your students know directly.
Desired Qualities:
- Fluency in English.
- Sensitivity to cultural differences.
- Positive and encouraging attitude, especially when students are feeling discouraged.
- Dedicated to challenging and helping students improve their English.
- Adaptability to different students’ learning styles.
Required Clearances:
- PA Child Abuse History Clearance
- PA Criminal Record Check
- FBI Criminal Background Check
- Safe Environment Training (given on site)
Time commitment: Our ESL classes are held in the evening and morning for an hour and a half. We ask that you commit to showing up the days you sign up for, or give further notice to ensure your students are informed.
Morning: Mon. Wed.-Fri. 11:30 am -1:00 pm (commitment of at least 2 days per week)
Evening: Mon. & Tues. 7:00 pm-8:30 pm (commitment of at least 1 day a week)

Description
The Mission of St. Joan of Arc is a worship site of Holy Innocents' Parish which is located in the neighborhood of Harrowgate in Philadelphia. We provide the presense of the Catholic Church in the neighborhood by serving our community through our varied ministries.
- We have a thriving Religiious Education program wich includes children and adults.
- We provide English as a Second Language classes four mornings and two evenings a week.
- Our After School Program takes care of children from neighboring charter and public schools.
- We operate a food pantry twice a week wich provides emergency food to an average of 125 families per month.
- We have recliamed an empty lot on Joyce Street with hopes of building a community garden for the neighbors.
