The purpose of these volunteers is to assist Thomas House and its residents during a disaster by playing a critical and vital role as an aid to the first responders. Our program supports Emergency Response Officials where we will be engaging and safely deploying spontaneous volunteers to respond to critical needs and/or long term recovery.
Disaster Cadres can reduce the impact of disasters by providing light search rescue, basic first aid services, and handing out disaster supplies. They support the planning, response, and recovery work for those impacted by the disaster. Appropriate training will be provided. As we request flexibility, you may be called upon to help Thomas House Shelter when a disaster strikes.
Volunteers will be required to put in about 10 hours of training in the first few months of their time with the shelter. After training, they will be expected to attend Safety Meetings every six months. This is to ensure the organization's disaster relief standards are maintained and the volunteers will update any outdated information in the disaster recover documents.
