ORGANIZATION: ALTERNATIVES TO VIOLENCE PROJECT

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

The Alternatives To Violence Project is an international movement of creative conflict resolution built on affirmation, respect for all, community, cooperation and trust. AVP, begun in 1975 and is active worldwide, Please visit AVP.International to see what we are up to around the world.

AVP is an association of community, school and prison-based groups offering experiential workshops in personal growth, community development and creative conflict management. See AVPCalifornia.org for details on what our local California chapters are doing.

AVP now has a local council right here in the San Joaquin Valley!

Founded in prison and developed from the real life experiences of prisoners, AVP encourages every person’s innate power to positively transform first themselves and then the world we live in.

We welcome you to join us for a hands-on, experiential, conflict resolution, community building workshop where you’ll connect deeply with others, laugh, share, listen while learning new ways to reduce conflict in your world, your classroom, your family, or at work.

  • Take no notes... Come prepared to discover new ways of approaching disagreement.
  • Treat yourself to this workshop purely for personal growth. Or make it a first step toward facilitating ALTERNATIVES TO VIOLENCE PROJECT (AVP) workshops or joining the local AVP council (volunteering).
This workshop is led by experienced volunteers, who are currently facilitating workshops at California prisons, as well as with community and with youth.

Past participants appreciated:

"Interaction with diverse and interesting group members"

"Study of my 'buttons’ and ways to deactivate them"

"Frequent varying of pace and activity in workshops"

"My increased willingness to listen and not pre-judge a person or a situation"

"I have learned that when people cannot tolerate others' moral, cultural, religious or political differences, conflict is inevitable and often costly, so the first thing we have to learn is that our fights and personal differences are part of life and that it is a mistake to avoid conflict; life can be less painful if we learn to anticipate conflict and manage it constructively" NOHA - SUDAN

Mission Statement

AVP is a program working to reduce violence by learning about relationships, communication, and conflict resolution through workshops in prisons, jails, and the community. We are a volunteer-run, non-profit, organized by local volunteers. We invite you to learn about AVP, take a workshop, and even become a volunteer facilitator!

Description

The thinking behind AVP

We understand that conflict is a natural and normal part of life, and that it is possible to learn new ways of handling it. By holding workshops in which the participants consider the underlying causes of friction and violence, practical ways of dealing with situations of conflict are worked out. Our workshops build on everyday experiences and try to help us move away from violent or abusive behavior by developing other ways of dealing with conflicts. They help us to increase the respect we have for ourselves and others.

Workshop Settings AVP is for everyone, everywhere. AVP workshops are designed to easily adapt to the characteristics of each setting.

In Prison AVP has been known to help reduce violence within prisons, reduce recidivism, and improve communication both among the incarcerated community and with prison authorities.

In Communities AVP has been known to help improve interpersonal relationships and reduce incidents of domestic violence.

Schools AVP has been known to help reduce classroom-related violence and improve playground friendships and academic skills.
