ORGANIZATION: San Diego History Center

Do you like local history and military history? Do you enjoy sharing stories of your community? Then volunteer with the History Center!

The San Diego History Center tells the diverse story of our region - past, present, and future - educates and enriches our community, preserves our history, and fosters civic pride.

The San Diego History Center is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join our team during the run of an upcoming exhibition, Mail Call. On view from November 2017 to January 2018, this exhibition will share the history of military mail from the American Revolution to the present day: How does this mail reach its destination? What roles does it play? Why does it influence morale? This Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition explores the great lengths taken to set up and operate postal services under extraordinary circumstances. It also features letters that reveal the expressions, emotions, and events of the time including examples from the San Diego History Center’s collection. On the battlefront and at home, mail provides a vital communication link between military service personnel, their communities, and their loved ones.

We are recruiting volunteers for the museum Gallery Guide role. Duties include welcoming visitors in a friendly and professional manner, engaging visitors in conversations about the content and intent behind our exhibitions, answering questions, and enhancing the visitor experience. This is an opportunity for volunteers to utilize their unique skills and share their passion for San Diego and military history. Training on interpretive techniques and written materials are provided. Guide shifts are available each day of the week between the hours of 10am and 5pm.
