Simbolei: Supporting Literacy and Learning

Join us for our sixth annual Literacy Outreach program in rural Kenya. We read stories perform puppet shows and organize related art activities for students in rural Kenya elementary schools. Volunteers will interact with students and also have time to explore rural Kenya.

Volunteers should love books and kids and be willing to complete orientation and training both before travel and onsite, but do not need to have formal teaching experience or training.

Mission Statement

Simbolei Community Assistance Association supports the education and empowerment of young women and their families in Rift Valley Province, Kenya through support for the development of Simbolei Academy in Kamariny, Kenya, a boarding secondary school for 320 girls and through support for literacy and educational enrichment activities in primary schools and adult workshops throughout the community.

Description

Simbolei Community Assistance Association (SCAA) is a charitable 501 (c)(3) organization, originally organized by Richard and Andrea Kaitany, supporting the education and empowerment of young women and their families in Rift Valley Province, Kenya.

Our current project is the planning, construction and development of an innovative, non-profit, self-supporting high school for 320 girls in Rift Valley Province, Kenya. Simbolei Girls' Preparatory Academy will be located near Iten, at the edge of the Great Rift Valley. In addition to a rigorous academic curriculum, our school will provide community literacy programs, a community library, and community development activities to foster leadership and community activism within our student body.
