Literacy Volunteers and Advocates is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to addressing issues of adult functional literacy in the metropolitan Washington, DC area. We have been in this area since 1987 and have worked with hundreds of adults to improve their reading and writing skills. LVA offers Adult Basic Education (in small group classes) and our original program, One-to-One Tutoring. This fall in 2018, we are actively seeking volunteer teachers for our Basic Education Classes. You would work closely with our staff.
Many of the adults in our community are functionally illiterate. In fact, according to a 2007 report published by the National Institute for Literacy, 36% of the adults in the District of Columbia have reading and writing skills at Level 1 (the lowest level of literacy). In practical terms, this means they typically cannot locate an intersection on a map, identify and enter personal information on an employment application, or read a bedtime story to a child. YOU CAN HELP.
