Children experiencing homelessness need extra time and attention to succeed in school. Join our team and make a difference in the life of a homeless child by volunteering just one hour a week. No previous tutoring or teaching experience is required, only a love of learning and a willingness to make a real and lasting impact on a young person's life.
School on Wheels is a nonprofit organization that has been providing educational assistance to homeless children since 1993. Apply to be a School on Wheels tutor and in one hour a week you can impact two lives: yours and theirs. As a tutor and mentor, you will help your student to fill in the gaps in their education, and you will learn from them, too. Our wonderful staff provides all training and support. Description
Volunteering to tutor children experiencing homelessness with School on Wheels is a one-hour-a-week commitment and no teaching experience is needed. Volunteering with School on Wheels is an opportunity to share something significant with a child and in return gain meaning in your own life. You can make a difference by supporting children who live in local shelters, motels, foster group homes, and vehicles.
Opportunities: We have both online and in-person opportunities in Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, and San Diego ( online only ) counties. You can also volunteer at our Learning Center in Downtown LA with staff and other volunteers. Many children go to the Learning Center after school and throughout the summer.
The process to become a volunteer includes a few easy steps: fill out our application, attend a virtual training, provide two references, and complete a background check.
