Encourage a love of reading and increase fluency by helping students practice reading aloud.

Expert Listeners listen to students read aloud for 10-15 minutes each, help with difficult vocabulary and fluency, and ask questions to confirm comprehension. Training and building orientation are provided. Students will report to the Volunteers in a designated volunteer room at Horizon and in the Library at Pewaukee Lake Elementary. This academic-based support program will run October 16 through May 18 and, to build a rapport with the students, a weekly commitment is appreciated.

Horizon: 4th-6th grade. Morning and Afternoon blocks, Monday through Friday. Times vary.

Pewaukee Lake Elementary: 5K-3rd grade. Monday through Friday. Three blocks are available--10-11:10; 11:50-2:10; 2:15-3:20. All grades rotate through during their Library times.

Volunteering: Mission Statement The Pewaukee School District will establish connected relationships within the greater Pewaukee community. Description

The Pewaukee School District boasts 1300+ volunteers. The past 4 years, we have recruited, trained and celebrated a group of academic based volunteers who support our reading and math curriculum. In addition to our Expert Listeners and Math Mentors, we have volunteer help in the classroom, as field trip chaperons, with clerical support and help setting up before concerts and art shows. In 2014-15, our parents, grandparents, local clubs and organizations, churches and community members gave 35,500 hours to "Open the Door To Each Child's Future".
