PARENTS AND CHILDREN ADVANCE TOGETHER LITERACY MINISTRIES

  • 25 people are interested

PCAT operates in two locations, one at Ruskin Elementary and one at Wimauma Elementary.

Volunteer mentors come to one of the sites at least one day per week during after school hours. Students served are in kindergarten or first grade and have been referred by their teacher because they are not reading at grade level.

Volunteers provide one-on-one intensive reading instruction which has been proven to be effective in improving reading achievement. Educational workbooks, readers, and educational games are utilized by the volunteers according to individualized plans developed to address each child's needs. Test scores have demonstrated significant progress in reading by students who complete the program, and almost all students are promoted to the next grade. Volunteers work under staff supervision.
